A career in law requires dedication and years of study and training. From the LSATs to the years in law school and then studying for the bar exam, the lawyer’s life is one of ongoing learning.

Yes, the legal life might be a grind, but there are many lawyers who simply love the law. It’s a passion that combines an interest in the workings of law with an interest in the ongoing developments in how the law works in our rapidly changing world.

What to Do with a Law Degree

You have a law degree. What avenue should you pursue?

Making this decision may be a difficult process for you. And with over 300 choices in the law field alone, it’s no wonder. Narrow your search by focusing in on the following areas:

  • Ask some questions. What do you enjoy most? What has been important for you for a long time? What are your skills? What do you struggle with? Answering questions like these will quickly focus your interests.
  • Look into non-traditional law jobs. Many options are available.
  • What are employers currently looking for that fits in with the niche you want to pursue? While you shouldn’t take a job just because you qualify, you need to search for jobs that may be a potential career.
  • Try some online college classes to see where your skills lie. You may just be surprised at what you can do.
  • Make a point to visit with companies where you have an interest. Do a “getting to know you” interview. This way, you find out about career you’re interested in without expecting a job. You are interviewing and asking questions to learn more.
  • Join online groups and social networks. Meet people. You never know when someone will say, “You would be a perfect fit for Company X. Do you want me to contact them?”

Finding the right niche for your talents and skills in the law profession takes work, but don’t let this process discourage you. After the hard work you will see even more hard work ahead, but it’s worth it. The good news is that by following the suggestions above, you will find just the right career for you.

People’s familiarity with the legal field is often limited to images on television. Undergoing a divorce, being sued and negotiating the sale of property are other ways that some people come in contact with lawyers. Understanding the real day-to-day life of a lawyer requires talking to people who practice the profession.

The Advantages of Being a Lawyer

Law is considered one of the more lucrative professions. While some lawyers charge a flat fee for their services, others charge an hourly fee, making the potential for earnings tremendous. This is one of the major reasons that many students are drawn to law school. As long as crime exists, corporations merge, properties are purchased and individuals have personal disputes, work will exist for the average lawyer.

Prestige is yet another popular reason for entering the legal field. Lawyers are considered intelligent and professional by much of society. While some may consider lawyers unethical or benders of the truth, when in a bind, even the critics must turn to lawyers.

Challenges Associated With Being a Lawyer

One of the greatest challenges with becoming a lawyer is enduring multiple years of strenuous coursework. In many localities, law school consists of three years of schooling beyond the undergraduate degree. Along with this extensive schooling come the infamous student loans which must be paid off. Paying off the loans generally requires working for high-paying and sometimes oppressive firms.

Despite the challenges of becoming a lawyer and practicing law, some attorneys are perfectly happy in their work. The conscientious lawyer provides a much-needed and valuable service to society.
